About Me
I am Oleksandr Nashyvan. I build software: web and mobile applications, blockchain platforms, AI products. My first job was in 2008, and I have not stopped writing code since.
I run Moonion as CEO and CTO. I put the team together in 2011 and registered the company in the USA in 2021. We take small projects and large ones, low load and high load, from centralised and private systems to decentralised and open source, including the ones that need various services and hardware wired together. Our motto: "What we work on today, others will only think of tomorrow."

At Waterfall I am Development Team Lead. Waterfall is a smart contract platform built on a Directed Acyclic Graph with a fast finality Proof of Stake consensus. I sit in the research team as well as the development one, so a fair number of the ideas in the protocol started as mine and I take them through to implementation. Since 2022 I have co-authored 22 published papers, 20 of them with a registered DOI, in venues including IET Blockchain, ACM DLT: R&P, Springer LNNS and IEEE.
Since November 2022 I lead the open source project of IEEE P3271.01, the IEEE draft standard for recurring transactions using distributed ledger technologies. It is the first structured non-custodial framework for automated recurring payments, in a space where trustless solutions did not exist. That work was recognised twice in 2025: the IEEE SA Emerging Technology Award from the IEEE Standards Association, and the IEEE Blockchain Technical Community Region 8 Technical Merits Award, presented at the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest on 15 December 2025.

Optimizing Blockchain for Enhanced Performance

In the fast-paced world of blockchain technology, there is always room for innovation and improvement. One of my recent experiences at Waterfall Network exemplifies this journey of performance enhancement. We've been working diligently to push the boundaries of transaction processing, achieving an impressive throughput of 32,434 transactions per second. However, I believe there is further potential to escalate this figure to around 41,666 transactions per second. This pursuit requires rigorous testing and optimization at its core.
Incremental Optimizations
Upon analyzing our existing system, we discovered several areas that warranted optimization. Primarily, enhancing the codebase for better performance and implementing parallel processing where feasible presented significant opportunities for improvement. By focusing on block propagation and finalization, we can streamline processes and gain the efficiency needed to reach our transactional goals.
Embracing BlockDAG's Potential
One of the fascinating aspects of our technological arsenal is the BlockDAG approach. This architecture allows for concurrent block creation, positioning it as a powerhouse of scalability and performance. By leveraging this, we anticipate not only maximizing transaction rate but also ensuring high scalability and robustness across the network.
Challenges in Optimization
While the path to optimization is promising, it is not without its hurdles. The intricacy of optimizing block finalization and verification remains a significant challenge. We aim to dissect the current process, ensuring every block's path is as efficient as possible without compromising on security or reliability.
Future Insights
Looking ahead, reducing the slot duration from 6 seconds to 3 seconds could catalyze further performance gains. However, this transition would require deep recalibration of both the protocol and its underlying economics, calling for a thoughtful rollout plan. We need to evaluate the risks and focus on minimizing disruptions to the network while enhancing its overall performance.

With a keen focus on optimizing block delivery and transaction volume, my work within the Waterfall Network team seeks to redefine what is possible within existing protocols, leveraging cutting-edge testing methodologies and infrastructure innovations.
The pursuit commenced on a substantial scale, employing nine servers with 4,096 validators each — totaling 36,864 validators. This infrastructure, powered by Standard_D4s_v5 instances on Microsoft Azure, features 4 vCPUs and 16 GB of RAM per node. We’re grateful to Microsoft for providing the compute resources that made this testing possible. Such robust architecture is pivotal when aiming to grasp the true capabilities and resilience of Waterfall Network. It allows us to simulate high-pressure conditions that reflect real-world scenarios, enabling precise measurement and optimization of throughput in daily network operations.
Navigating Through a Multi-Provider Environment
Managing a hybrid network across global providers such as AWS, Google Cloud, Hetzner, and Azure has been instrumental in achieving Waterfall Network’s ambitious performance goals. Each provider presents unique capabilities and configurations, granting flexibility and redundancy in our operations. My approach hinges on leveraging these platforms’ distinct features to optimize resource deployment and ensure seamless orchestration of services across varied environments.
In this ecosystem, automating deployments with Terraform has substantially streamlined our operations — it’s a tool I’ve become reliant on for reducing manual configuration burdens. By integrating these cloud services strategically, we’ve not only ensured robust network availability for Waterfall Network, but also explored various economic models, aided by competitive pricing dynamics that often lead to favorable operational costs.
Innovating Beyond Traditional Limits
The real breakthrough, however, comes in our testing approach. While conventional blockchains might bind themselves to one block per slot, Waterfall Network’s BlockDAG architecture unlocks the possibility of multiple blocks simultaneously within a single slot. This innovative twist means expanding transaction throughput exponentially. Currently, testing has shown performance achievements of processing 25,600 transactions per second. Such milestones are the stepping stones to scalability that surpasses many of today’s popular networks.
Our immediate focus is on refining our processes to reliably produce 16 blocks per slot — a design choice we’ve intentionally pursued to enhance throughput and scalability in Waterfall Network. As part of our roadmap, we plan to push this further by testing configurations with 24 blocks per slot. While reducing the slot duration from 6 seconds to 3 seconds remains a future objective, it represents a significantly more complex milestone due to its far-reaching impact on network parameters, synchronization, and economic models. Nevertheless, EVM compatibility within Waterfall Network ensures we remain well-positioned to support the decentralized applications and smart contracts currently thriving on platforms like Ethereum — all without compromising performance or scalability.
