About Centre for Digital Media

We are the Centre for Digital Media (CDM), located in Vancouvers Creative District. We build digital media talent and help organizations solve real challenges by empowering people to use digital media to address societys most pressing issues.
We provide project based education and upskilling through our Master of Digital Media and short track digital product development courses. Our programs support students and professionals who want to enter the digital media workforce, advance their careers, or launch new companies.
We are built on world class collaboration through a partnership of four leading academic institutions UBC, SFU, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and BCIT. We also connect industry partners with multidisciplinary student teams of designers, developers, artists, and product managers to tackle research and development challenges with applied solutions.
We invite you to engage with us by exploring our programs, connecting with our industry partnerships and talent pipeline, or joining the Creative District ecosystem through vision aligned tenancy and community initiatives focused on inclusion, partnership with First Nations, sustainability, and positive social impact.

Why the Centre for Digital Media Is the Right Place to Build Your Digital Media Career
Choosing where to invest in your education is one of the most consequential decisions you will make. If you are drawn to digital media, whether you are a recent graduate figuring out your next move or a professional ready to shift direction, that decision deserves more than a glossy brochure. It deserves a clear picture of what you will actually do, who you will work with, and where it can take you. That is the conversation we want to have.
At the Centre for Digital Media, we are built around a single belief: that the best way to prepare people for the digital media industry is to put them inside it, from day one.
## A Program Designed for Where You Are Right Now
We know that students do not arrive here from the same starting point. Some are stepping straight out of an undergraduate degree, full of momentum but looking for the specialized depth that a broader degree could not give them. Others have been working in a field for years and feel the pull toward something new, something more aligned with where the industry is heading and where their own ambitions want to go.
Our programs are structured to meet both of those realities.
The Master of Digital Media is our flagship program. It is a graduate-level experience that goes well beyond theory. Students work in multidisciplinary teams alongside designers, developers, artists, and product managers, tackling real challenges brought to us by industry partners. By the time you graduate, you have not just studied digital media. You have practiced it, shipped it, and defended it in front of people who work in the field every day.
For those who want to explore the space before committing to a full master's program, we also offer shorter digital product development courses and pre-MDM experiences like our summer school. These are designed to give you a genuine feel for how we work and what the MDM environment is like, so you can make an informed decision rather than a leap of faith.
Whether you are ready to go all in or you want to test the waters first, there is a path here for you.
## Real Projects, Real Stakes
One of the things we hear most consistently from students is that the industry project experience changes how they think about their own capabilities. That is not an accident. It is the design.
We connect our student teams directly with organizations facing genuine research and development challenges. These are not simulated case studies or classroom exercises dressed up to look real. They are actual problems, brought by actual partners, with outcomes that matter to both sides. Students have to listen carefully, ask the right questions, build toward a solution, and present their work to people who will push back on it.
This kind of experience does something that coursework alone cannot. It builds professional judgment. It builds the ability to navigate ambiguity, collaborate under pressure, and deliver something meaningful on a deadline. Those are precisely the qualities that make someone employable the moment they leave the program.
Our graduates go on to diverse careers across the digital media landscape. Some join established organizations in design, development, or product. Others use the program as the launchpad for their own companies. The range of paths reflects the range of skills the program builds, because digital media itself is not a single lane. It is an ecosystem, and we prepare students to move through it.
## The Institutional Foundation Behind Your Education
We also want to be transparent about something that sets CDM apart in a way that is easy to overlook until you are actually inside it.
We are not a standalone institution. We are built on a partnership between four of British Columbia's leading academic institutions: UBC, SFU, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and BCIT. Each of those partners brings a distinct perspective and a distinct area of excellence. Together, they make it possible for CDM to offer something genuinely multidisciplinary, not as a marketing claim, but as a structural reality.
What that means in practice is that your education draws on deep expertise across technical development, creative design, business strategy, and applied research. The people you learn from and the frameworks you encounter come from across that full spectrum. And the students you work with bring different backgrounds and different strengths, which is exactly what a real project team looks like.
That diversity of perspective is not a side benefit. It is core to what makes the experience effective.
## A Community That Stays With You
Education is not just about what you learn. It is about who you become inside the environment where you learn it, and who you carry forward with you when you leave.
We are located in Vancouver's Creative District, which means CDM sits inside a broader ecosystem of organizations and individuals who are thinking seriously about the intersection of technology, creativity, and social impact. The community you build here extends beyond your cohort. It reaches into that wider ecosystem, and into the network of alumni and industry partners who have moved through CDM before you.
We take seriously our responsibility to build that community with intention. Our values around inclusion, partnership with First Nations, sustainability, and positive social impact are not decorative. They shape the culture of the place and the kinds of conversations that happen inside it. Students who care about those things find that CDM reflects those commitments back to them in real and tangible ways.
## Where This Leads
If you are trying to decide whether CDM is the right fit, we would encourage you to think less about credentials and more about what you want to be capable of doing.
Do you want to understand how digital media products are built from the inside out? Do you want to graduate with a portfolio of real work, not just a transcript? Do you want to be part of a community that is genuinely invested in your growth and in the growth of the field? And do you want the flexibility to enter that journey from wherever you are right now, whether that is a recent degree or a decade of professional experience?
If the answer to those questions is yes, then what we offer at the Centre for Digital Media is worth a serious look. We are not trying to be everything to everyone. We are trying to be exactly the right place for students who want to specialize, to build something real, and to launch or redirect a career with genuine momentum behind it.
That is what we are here for.
